Trip Dates : December 28, 2019 – January 4, 2020

Trip Cost : INR 26,000

This trip is going to be very different from the usual trips. We are going to see a state that is arguably India’s prettiest, visually.

We are going to Srinagar, Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam in this trip, and we shall try visit the most beautiful locations in all these places. We shall be seeing a village that only makes cricket bats, we will be going up the highest gondola in the world, we will be doing some beginner skiing if we want to, we will be riding on shikaras in the beautiful Dal lake, we will be sitting around bonfires at night and seeing a thousand stars in the night sky. We will be sauntering in pretty valleys and we will visit India’s best skiing destination as well.

And we are going to see it in winter. When it is at is purest, when the Himalayan mountains have powder white snow, when the trees – the leaves and branches of the Chinars and the Deodars have a whitish silvery tinge, the meadows are carpeted green and white – making Kashmir look like a magical fairyland.

Unlike summers, there will hardly be many tourists in this season. This trip is not about dancing in bars and clubs. Of course we will party, for Christmas and New Years have to be celebrated with much enthusiasm, but we will probably be doing it in big rooms in our cottages, or around bonfires on cold nights and a thousand stars smiling upon us from the sky.

This trip is about letting go of all of 2019, and spending the last week of this year with yourself. Wake up to the Kashmiri kahwa tea, take in the morning sun, and later road trip with your new friends. This trip is about playing in the snow, about sitting on mountains and taking in the incredibly gorgeous panoramas, sitting by bristling icy rivers, making new friends, and spending time with yourself.

Note: During winters,  most roads are open in Kashmir because a lot of foreign tourists come in for skiing in Gulmarg, but in case some roads get closed abruptly because of snowfall, we shall improvize and change the day’s plan according to the situation then.

The temperatures will be in single digits and if its a very cold winter, maybe a couple of days temperatures will be in minus degrees in the night, but we will have warm rooms, cozy blankets, bonfires, and the nice big bunch of trippers all huddling close and talking till the wee hours of the night.

I think this trip is basically for travellers who love the mountains, who love snow, who love the peace and tranquility of nature, who are not looking for a wild end to 2019 but a beautiful as well as relaxed one.

As for me, the sky is going to be so incredibly clear that I can’t wait to stare at the stars!

Day 1
December 28: Fly into Srinagar; Overnight at Srinagar

Fly into Srinagar in the morning. Upon your arrival at the airport, a cab will transfer the group to the hotel.

After freshening up a bit, we shall go for the beautiful Cheshmashahi Mughal Garden and then go on a shikara ride on the lovely Dal lake.

We then head to the beautiful NishatBagh Mughal Gardens. A terraced garden, NishathBagh was built in the 17 century. It is the second largest Mughal garden in Kashmir after the Shalimar Bagh, but is more beautiful than Shalimar.

The biggest advantage of visiting Kashmir during the winter season is that there won’t be too many tourists then.

Day 2
December 29 : Day Trip to Sonamarg ; Overnight at Srinagar

Today after breakfast, we head to Sonamarg. The drive, just like to anywhere in Kashmir, is beautiful. In this sixty kilometre journey, we shall be crossing orchards, fields, and soon there will be snow walls, six to eight feet high, flanking both sides of the roads.

When we reach there, we can either go for a hike somewhere in the hills by ourselves and have our own mini adventure. Somewhere we can stop and spend time near the river. Time for conversations, snow fights, sitting and absorbing the beauty of this piece of heaven.

We shall return to Srinagar in the evening.

Day 3
December 30 : Drive down to Gulmarg. Overnight at Gulmarg

All of Kashmir is beautiful, but Gulmarg, not just the place, but even the route to it, makes my heart sing. The route is full of pine trees, Deodars, Chinars, Amaltas and Kikar trees flanking the mountainside and render the tall hills an even greater beauty.

Gulmarg is probably one of the most scenic places I have seen in all of India. And we spend shall spend two amazing days exploring the vistas.

Gulmarg is the top destination to ski in India, On this day, we shall see the ski resort, and one can try their hands at some basic beginner skiing. Its fun to glide over snow, learn some maneuvering tricks and click some great pics.

Day 4
December 31 : World’s Highest Gondola Ride; Overnight at Gulmarg

We shall take the Gondola ride on the world’s highest cable car, all the way up Apharwat Peak.

The cable car ride gives you a stunning views of the snow covered mountains. There are two levels. More than 4000 metres high, the second level is not very far from the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. The second (higher) level is accessible only if there are no snow storms at the upper reaches of the peak

Last year we were at level one and it was completely covered with fresh snow. It is also the last day of the year. Kashmir might not be known for its parties or for clubbing. But wherever we are, let us party like crazy tonight, and bond and wish for the happiest new year!

Day 5
January 1 : Drive to Pahalgam; Enroute stop at Pampore Bats village

Next morning, after breakfast, we leave for Pahalgam. A lot of chinar trees and woolly dogs later, we shall see the first of the saffron fields just before Pampore village.

Pampore is a bats’ village. As the name suggests, the entire village is engaged in making cricket bats, and we shall stop at a small bat factory enroute.

We then continue our journey through the mountains, meadows on both sides, and soon the Lidder river will join us, running parallel bristling and icy all the way to Pahalgam.

We shall check into the hotel by late afternoon. Later, we will head out into this beautiful town.

Day 6
January 2 :Betaab Valley and Chandanwadi visit, overnight Pahalgam

After a lazy relaxed breakfast the next morning, we will visit the beautiful Betaab Valley nearby.

We then head to the snow covered mountains of Chandanwadi, which is the last motorable point for the Amarnath trek. The frozen Sheshnag lake is here. Chandanwadi usually has winter sports like snowboarding.

Day 7
January 3 : Aru Valley visit; overnight at Pahalgam

After a lazy breakfast, we head to another of Pahalgam’s famous valleys – Aru Valley.

A large green meadow during summers, it has been a location for the shooting of many Bollywood movies. In winters, it looks like a mountain meadow in Switzerland – amix of white and green, with towering imposing snowy white cliffs in the background.

It is our last night in Kashmir. Let’s stay up and play games and dance, create memories with new found friends that we are going to miss when we are back home.

Day 8
January 4: Drive down to Srinagar airport; head back to your cities

After breakfast, we head for Srinagar airport. Book your departures back to your cities in the afternoon because we will not reach Srinagar before noon. It makes sense to book your flights post 2 pm.

As all good things come to an end, so must this trip. It’s time to bid farewell to each other, to the mountains and this beautiful land that has been so ravaged by man.

Thank you for coming on this trip, folks! Hopefully we will meet somewhere soon again, some other destination, some other trip
