Maximum Altitude: 6900 ft
Duration: 1 day
Taking the term “Leaving your heart in a place” literally is a stunning heart shaped lake on the top of Chembra Peak. When you are up here, you’ll feel as if the cupid struck his arrow making the earth fall in love with the misty clouds and their love is reflected in the water of Hridhayathadakam (Yes that’s the name of the lake which translates to Heart’s Lake).
Located at 6,900 ft, Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad. The peak adjoins Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu and Vallarimala in Kozhikode. This trek is undeniably one of the most picturesque and most exquisite treks in all of Kerala, and is definitely among the perfect destinations for trekking in the Western Ghats.
The trek starts from the small town of Meppady where you need to obtain a permit from the forest office. After you have taken the permit you can start climbing uphill. It is flanked with vast tea plantations on both sides. The fragrance of tea, coffee and spices dwells everywhere with the misty mornings completing this beautiful picture. The path later gives way to lush green mountains. Slowly the panoramic views of the valleys emerge out of the morning air to claim your rapt attention.
The trek is not very difficult and can be attempted by beginners as well. Breathing the fresh mountain air, you keep climbing until you are standing on the banks of a heart-shaped lake laid carefully on a bed of crispy green meadow. This natural marvel will take your breath away and make your heart skip a beat. The mystifying lake is believed to have never been dried and the pristine waters of the lake are considered to have remedial clouts. The locals also believe that once Sita had rested here and took a bath in the lake.
From the top, you get a panoramic view of not only entire Wayanad but also a large chunk of Kozhikode, Malappuram and Niligiri districts. The lush greenery around is a sight for sore eyes. So find that perfect spot and lie down watching some pretty cloud formation. Who knows, maybe you’ll spot the cupid!
Best Time To Visit
Trekking can be done all year round but the best time to trek to Chembra Peak is post monsoon. The months of September-October are when the forest will be dense and lush green and the atmosphere will be cool and cloudy.
